ALYTES Project
Establish a comprehensive conservation program for the Betic midwife toad throughout the species' natural distribution area.
Establish an exsitu breeding colony, habitat restoration, control of wild populations, research and application of bioremediation measures against the pathogenic fungus in the field, creation of a research unit on the species and an interpretation center in the town of Canillas del Aceituno, Malaga. Creation of a new reproduction room for the species under biosafety conditions with an area visible to the public. BIOPARC Fuengirola.
The Betic midwife toad is one of the ten most endangered species of amphibians in Europe. Among its threats is the spread of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, a lethal fungus that is decimating amphibian populations across the planet. Our project contemplates:
