The AEECL is a consortium of European zoos and universities established for the conservation and research of Endangered species of lemurs in Madagascar. Taking the blue-eyed lemur or Sclater's lemur as its emblem species, the AEECL has promoted its conservation in the Sahamalaza peninsula, in the northwest of the island, where it has been carrying out conservation and research actions since 1998. In 2001, the UNESCO This area was declared a Biosphere Reserve, and since 2007 it has been a National Park.
Species: Several species of lemurs (Lemuridae), including the red-bellied lemur (Eulemur rubriventer), the crowned lemur (Eulemur coronatus), and the blue-eyed lemur (Eulemur macaco flavifrons).
In situ conservation. The AEECL has established a research and conservation station in the Ankarafa Forest, in the largest area of intact blue-eyed lemur habitat. Generate environmental development and education programs for local communities, based on cultivation and reforestation techniques, fire fighting, construction of schools and provision of drinking water. Implement ex situ conservation based on the captive breeding programs in Europe (EEP) for this and other lemur species, in which our BIOPARCS participate.
