WAPCA Project

Conservation of habitat and wild populations of threatened primates in West Africa

What is
the project

It is an Initiative of several European zoos aimed at preserving the three species of critically endangered primates. The project seeks the involvement of local populations in its strategy conservation, through environmental education and teaching sustainable livelihoods that do not involve felling the forest or poaching. 

What have we achieved?: A Breeding Center for Endangered Primates has been created, which participates in the EEP at the European level. There is also the collaboration of the Accra Zoo, converted into a center for environmental education and ex situ reproduction of these species.

Owl Conservation Project

The main objective of the project is to strengthen the barn owl population in the Valencian Community, reversing the serious decline it has suffered in recent years due to pesticide use, habitat loss, roadkill, and light pollution. Through controlled breeding, reintroduction, and environmental education, the project seeks to restore the fundamental role of this species as a natural pest regulator and indicator of the environmental quality of Mediterranean ecosystems.

Edwards Project

Determine the genetic variability of the captive population in European and US zoos to enable reintroduction actions of the species in its historical distribution area. Creation of a breeding and propagation center for the species in Vietnam, for its reintroduction to Vietnam and Laos.

ALYTES Project

Establish a comprehensive conservation program for the Betic midwife toad throughout the species' natural distribution area.

EMYS project

Reduce populations of invasive exotic turtles to reinforce native populations.

Rhino Dog Squad Project

Collaborate in the monitoring of rhino populations in Kenya, generate patrols of environmental agents and train trained dogs to detect signs of poachers.

Habitat conservation and ethological research.
